The National Internet Exchange of India is the neutral meeting point of the ISPs in India. Its main purpose is to facilitate exchange of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of international bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hops and thus reducing latency.
NiXi envisages two fold benefits. The operational costs for peering ISPs are reduced through better utilisation of expensive international bandwidth as well as optimal levels of domestic interconnectivity. The ISPs can pass on the savings thus benefitting the internet subscribers. Additionally, subscribers experience better quality of services in terms of response time and bandwidth for communicating within India, depending on the number of peers the ISP establishes and the bandwidth it connects with to NiXi.
