A Brief Preview of the Education Sector through mid 2009 to Present
Education sector in India is witnessing a phenomenal growth across all levels. So much so that it is catching the attention of leading educational institutions and investors from around the world and had been a topic of serious discussions among policy makers, entrepreneurs, academicians, media barons and various stakeholders connected with this sector. Some of the top issues that caught recent limelight includes - ‘Right To Education Bill’ that is on verge of being rolled-out; the Cabinet Committee’s approval for establishment of a National Knowledge Network (NKN) to be implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC) of Govt. of India;and announcement of the revised ‘ICT in Education Policy’ for introduction of computer-based education at secondary and senior secondary levels of nearly 108,000 government and government-aided schools across the country. There have been drastic changes making news across Higher Education Sector as well indicated increased amount of money being invested to upgrade the ICT platform, introduction of new bills, adoption of bill for allowing foreign universities to open their campuses across India, and so on.
The recent economic downturn left some marks on the generation of students entering the job market but with a good scope of healing the bruises. Like health and nutrition sector, education sector is one of the areas where consumers are involved in making investments that are non-discretionary in nature. Substantial government investments coming into India's emerging education sector is evident from budget allocations in the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12), based on recommendations of National Knowledge Commission (NKC). It is expected that the education sector will be built on the increasingly accepted model of PPP. Heightened interest among Private Equity and Venture Capital funds to invest in Indian education sector are reposing entrepreneur confidence and reasserting growth projections. Few updates on investments in education sector indicate that this sector is considered as an attractive segment for long term investments. Education sector is inherently an area where growth is inevitable, especially, considering that India's young population and growing economy are increasingly becoming dependent on the same. Education stream sees 'no-bar' when we talk about the potential for its growth. If we look at the drivers of growth for this area, many factors can be listed down including -
- increasing expense in education;
- growing demand for better education at secondary and senior secondary level;
- Trends in digital competencies in the national education programmes & policies
- increase in demand for quality education at level of Graduation and Post Graduation;
- increasing need for skill-based and industry-relevant education;
- growing importance of vocational training;
- role of public-private partnership in education sector, cooperation and collaborations in multi-stakeholders partnerships;
- opportunities of inclusive education;
- eLearning, Pedagogy & Quality Standards;
- Assessment and Certification;
- Virtual Classroom Dynamics
- growing emphasis for integration of information and communication technology in all of the above related factors
